Puccini jumps on the bandwagon of lyrical, Italian realism with Tosca, in which an opera singer and an artist run afoul of the all-powerful chief of police in Rome in 1800. We’ll explore the musical and contextual changes of fortune and twists of fate in the music and the tight libretto, and look at where this opera sits in Puccini’s output and the larger sweep of opera history.
